Public Lecture February 11
Born in India, Shashi Caan is an internationally recognized interior and product designer. She was educated in the UK and the US and has earned degrees in Art, Industrial Design, and Architecture. She is the former Director of the Interior Design at Parsons School of Design in New York City. Caan is described as a driving force in changing the potential of interior design to become a more dynamic and creative practice. The Shashi Caan Collective strives to create a bridge between art and science, the esoteric and the pragmatic, and between practice and education. The Collective focuses not only on the projects with clients, but also with a consistent and rigorous (and sometimes provocative) inquiry into the relationships between humans and the spaces that they occupy.
Caan's unique and multifaceted cultural and educational background is seen in her textile and carpet designs. Her achievements are widely recognized in magazines such as Architectural Record, Interiors, Elle Décor, and Contract Design. Caan was Contract Magazine's 2005 Interior Designer of the Year. She won the IFMA GNY 2006 Educator of the Year, and is President-Elect 2007-2009 of the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers.
